Turkey's Intellectuals are Leaving the Country

The New York Times’s article about the migration of intellectual and wealthy people of Turkey created debate. Among these, 12,000 people who migrated equal to 12 percent of Turkey's wealthiest millionaires. This means that assets and wealth of Turkey are also moving. Before this, two great holdings, Ülker Group and Doğuş Holding, had moved their assets abroad. In recent days, it was published in the news that Sabancı family who holds one of the most important holdings of the country has acquired Malta’s citizenship. According to the data of Turkish Statistical Institute (TSI), migration abroad with an increase of 42 percent reached 253 thousand people in 2018. It would not be wrong to think that most of them are well educated and high income earners.

Probably, most of the migrants are those who live in the west and think that their freedom is threatened. These people are secular-minded and do not want to live under an authoritarian regime which is increasingly repressive. It is the culturel accumulation that determines one's behavior, not their thoughts. The rulers of the country come from an islamic culture which has conservative and semi-feudal character. According to this culture, women are not equal to men. In conditions where they grow, there is no cultural basis for a liberal democracy, and thus they reduce democracy to elections. They consider democracy to be a dominance of the majority, rather than a government in which the rights of the minority are protected. Both the power and the masses who vote for them think that they could do everything based on their parliamentary majority.

Just last week, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan accused an artist with fascism, who wanted him to listen to Mozart, says a lot to us. Mozart may sound like torture to someone who hasn't come from a culture listening to classical Western music.

The people who live in the western part of the country near Europe and are more historically and culturally fond of their freedoms are uncomfortable with these. Today, many of these people have begun to lose their belief that rulership can be changed by election. While one part of this group which is higher than a certain age and has upper income level acquires western countries’ citizenship by purchasing real estate from those countries, the other part of this group which has lower level income is at least in pursuit of making their children acquire western countries’ citizenship.

The contribution of these 253 thousand people to the national income and to the intellectual level of the country might be equal to 10 million of the remaining population. More than that, because of the immigrants were the most cultured part the country would be intellectually drier in time.
