It was announced that Turkish Naval Forces would establish a naval base in Trabzon, which is in the Eastern Black Sea Region. The construction of the base to be established in Surmene District of Trabzon has already begun. But it puts a question mark in the minds that for what purpose and to whom this base is to be established. At present, Turkish Navy has a naval base in Karadeniz Eregli in the west of the Black Sea.

Strategy experts say that if you really want to establish a naval base in the Eastern Black Sea there must be a threat in that region. Turkey's relations with Georgia, which is one of the nearest countries in that region are very good. All that remains is Russia. But there seems to be no problem with Russia. When it comes to S-400 missile contract and to issues such as Syria, Turkey-Russia relations look good.

It is known that the United States has  wanted a NATO base in the Black Sea for a long time. The aim was to open a corridor to Afghanistan through the Black Sea-Caucasus-Central Asia over Trabzon. According to the website www.virahaber.com; in the past months, a US military commander who was sent to Trabzon said he wanted to anchor the US warships at the port. Also before; a US commander came to Trabzon after the problem between Russia and Georgia and asked that the US warships be allowed to anchor in our port.

It is highlighted that US needs a military base in Trabzon to rule the Caucasus and Central Asia, to carry the wealth of this region to the West, to inactivate Turkey, to isolate Iran.

Pro-government Yenisafak newspaper writer Ibrahim Karagul wrote an article on February 20 in 2009 and its title was "Shall we give Trabzon to US?". In his article, he said that, "The Black Sea is growing as the most important issue to Turkey for the moment. Ankara has followed a very careful policy up until today. We hope that this region will be the center of peace and not war. But in any case, Afghanistan will be linked to the region for Taliban problem and logistic support line. Therefore, Trabzon and the Eastern Black Sea will be very important for the US. Say what? Let us sacrifice Trabzon in such a scenario?"

This shows that, Trabzon naval base is to be established for US interests, not for the interests of Turkey. However, in the coming days we will see for what this naval base has been given.
